I still have tab s2 8.0 on its 3rd battery but still usable I just got s8+ bc my tab s2 it's just starting to slow down. I can't use it as everyday as of 30 days ago so I added new battery factory reset it and clear cache partition and it helped but I notice a small slowdown.
Absolutely it's still worth purchasing. Like you said you can find some good deals on them right now. I recently bought mine, probably about 2 months ago from Best Buy and it was on sale for $100 off the normal price. I have used the Tab S2 extensively over those 2 months.
